The archiving system's built-in flexibility allows you to tailor the system to your needs and set automatic archiving policies that determine when, where, and how information is stored. Online storage can be used for content that must be immediately accessible and takes place on high-performance online disk arrays. Near-line storage is used for content that needs to be accessible within a few minutes (rather than immediately), this type of storage can take place in a more cost-effective tape library. Offline storage is used for content that doesn't need to be accessed in the near term, this type of storage takes place on tapes stored securely offsite.
When choosing storage and archive systems, there are four main issues to take into consideration:
- Capacity. The system must provide enough storage to accommodate all the digital content expected now and in the foreseeable future.
- Performance. The system must be able to deliver extremely large text and image files to users in minutes.
